Focus(1961) ~ High on the list of the most influential albums recorded by a jazz artist is the Stan Getz/Eddie Sauter 1961 collaboration known as Focus It is widely considered a masterpiece for its setting: a large ensemble featuring a soloist. Found on many jazz historians’ and writers’ top-ten lists of album releases, this recording has never been out of print. It was a high point for Stan Getz, one of the great tenor saxophonists, as well as for Eddie Sauter, one of the great composers of the twentieth century. The more familiar one becomes with Eddie Sauter’s Focus, the clearer it becomes that the writing is not simply an example of jazz with strings, nor is it a purely classical work with a jazz soloist playing over it. With dedication, Focus can stand as one of the truly rare instances where elements of jazz and classical music converge to create a sound that defies categorization.

A tribute show in honor of Mr. Sinatra’s 100th Birthday

Vocals

Carolyn Bacon, Mark Robinson, Desiree Goyette, Rocky Blumhagen

    Jazz Trio

César Cancino,  piano/music director

Jan Martinelli, bass  | Randy Hood, drums/percussion

Robert Lunceford, sound engineer

Our very own Rocky Blumhagen, former Siletz Bay board member, has created several fundraising shows for our festival through the years honoring Cole Porter, A Party with Comden & Green, Oh, those Gershwin Boys,  Broadway Baritone Duets, Irving Berlin and now the music that made Frank Sinatra famous!

This floor-show created by Summerwind Productions comes directly from the Bay Area with the complete cast that just completed 14 sold out shows at the Cinnabar Theater in Petaluma, California.  The jazz inspired arrangements in this two-hour show weave over 56 songs into medleys, solos, duet, quartets, with a snappy dialogue that moves the show along and tells some of the Frank Sinatra story.   Performed by a company of four exceptional singers from San Francisco, Carolyn Bacon, Desiree Goyette, Mark Robinson and Rocky Blumhagen and supported by a tasty trio, Cesar Cancino, pianist/music director, Jan Martinelli on the double bass and Randy Hood, drums/percussion. Gorgeous complex harmonies enhance this romantic show, combined with creative staging by California director, Jennifer King makes for a stand out performance.

COTTON CLUB STOMP SHOW, Musical story of the Cotton Club, the most famous nightclub of the Jazz Age

With

Ken Peplowski, clarinet/host

Clairdee, voice

Nicole Greenidge Joseph, voice

Gary Hobbs, drums

David Captein, bass

Dick Hyman, piano

The Cotton Club, Harlem’s most prominent nightclub during the Prohibition era, delivered some of the greatest music legends of the Jazz Age — Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Fletcher Henderson, Ethel Waters, the Nicolas Brothers.  Some of the most iconic songs in the American songbook made their debut at the Cotton Club or were popularized in performances here.

An evening of music from the most influential night-club in the heyday of New York City night-life, the famed Cotton Club. We’ll look at the Cotton Club’s golden years–from the late 1920s and early ‘30s–when it featured such giants as Duke Ellington, Lena Horne, Cab Calloway, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, Ethel Waters and more and go all the way through to the final years, with a look at Louis’ Armstrong’s contributions to the Club. We feature many songs that were written either specifically for the Cotton Club Revues, or songs that became popular through their exposure in these shows. Look for “Stormy Weather”, “Creole Love Call”, “Minnie The Moocher”, “Sophisticated Lady”, “It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)”, “Ill Wind”, “Diga, Diga, Do” and more!
